Diya Aur Baati Hum is an Indian soap opera series which airs on STAR Plus. The show premiered on 29 August 2011 and airs every Mon-Fri 9 pm. The show portrays the story of Sandhya and her aspirations to become an IPS officer. She dreams to break the boundaries of her confined existence of middle-class values, but strained situations lead her to get married to Sooraj, who is a self-made man and runs a small sweet shop near his house. Soon she is a part of the family whom she does not even know.
The story focuses on her struggles to fulfill her dreams and a journey where she finds help from her husband who can make it possible.
Sandhya kothari lives in the town of Pushkar along with her family.Unfortunately her parents die in a bomb blast.Ankur,her brother makes arrangement for her marriage with Sooraj.He hides the fact that Sandhya is educated.
He lies to Sandhya that Sooraj is educated though he is uneducated.Sandhya is forced to married to Sooraj.Later Sandhya is shocked to know the truth.Sandhya avoids Sooraj.Sooraj however loves Sandhya though she doesn'have any such feelings.
Sandhya finds out the truth when Meenakshi burns the godown that was only of empty boxes.Meenakshi is thrown out of the house.Later she files a complaint in police and enter the house.Sandhya gets 3rd place in all over Rajhasthan universities.
When Rathi family finds this,Santhosh decides to throw her out of the house when Meenakshi lies that Sandhya has filed a complaint against her.Sooraj stops her by lying that he knew the truth.Sooraj stops her by lying that he knew the truth.Later he pleads Bhaboo to give Sandhya a chance.Santhosh agrees and gives her 15 days time to impress her.
Sandhya tries her best sometimes she wins but sometimes she failsdue to her family members.Santhosh brings to the light about Sooraj and Sandhya’s family issue in front of the family members.At last two days Sandhya was accused of stealing a jewel and giving it to Ankur.
When Preethi,Sandhya’s friend come to know about this she gives her a divorce notice and ask her to divorce Sooraj.She doesn’t agree for it.Sandhya proves her innocence but Santhosh refuses to believe it.Meanwhile Sooraj finds that Meenakshi had stolen it and provesSandhya’s innocence.Bhaboo ask Sandhya to stay back but she is not hapy to say this.She reveals that she was forced to say this as she could not prove Sandhya is not a perfect bahu for her family.
